Forestry and Logging Videos Collection

This is an edited version of the film “Forestry in the 90’s” created by Canadian Forest Products (Canfor). Parts of the video were filmed in Pemberton.

This is an edited version of the film “Finding a Safe Position” produced by WorkSafe BC in the 1990’s that was used to educate workers in safety practices.

Jobs in primary industries are still risky and fatality rates remain high in most primary industries. In logging and forestry 82 per 100,000 paid workers were injured or died between 1988-1993.

The forestry injury rate dropped 22% over the last five years, inclusive of an increase in 2010. The overall BC provincial injury rate dropped approximately 27% during the same period.

Between 2006 and 2010, estimated employment in forestry decreased almost 30% and the number of employers in forestry registered with WorksafeBC were down 28%.

In 2010, six workers died in B.C.’s forests for the second consecutive year. It’s still nothing to be proud of, but compared to 43 deaths in 2005, and an average of 22 in the years before that, it’s a clear indicator of a change for the better in the way people work in the woods.

West Coast Logging 1970’s

This is an edited version of the film titled “The Incredible Forest” which was produced by MacMillan Bloedel in the late 1960’s-1970’s. The film would have been used to educate the general public on the history of West Coast Logging and Forest Management Practices.
This clip is illustrates forest management practices in the 1970’s and describes the uses of wood and wood by products.

This an edited version of The Grand Opening of the Shadow Lake Interpretation Forest in 1991. This clip focuses on 1991 Transition Zone Silviculture Challenges.
Mike presents some information and history about Forest Renewal in the Shadow Lake area.
At the end, a candid conversation takes place about challenges in implementing Forest Management practices. Paul Kuster, on the left, was at the time District Manager of the Squamish Forest District. He is using this opportunity to talk to local loggers – Bill Brotherston (in middle sitting on log) and Raye Shier (on right).
