Image:
Description:
A red, orange, and white rusted Esso oil can that was Found in Collection. The can has a small handle attached at the top and three holes off to the right (one intentional large hole, two minor holes). On the front of the can reads “Net Contents Five Imperial – Imperial Esso Products” on the top/middle and “Imperial Oil Limited” on the bottom. The “Esso” brand is a trading name for the real company name, “Exxon Mobil”, primarily used by its predecessor Standard Oil of New Jersey after the break up of its original company in 1911. The company Standard Oil of New Jersey started making its products under the “Esso” brand in 1926. In 1972, the name Esso was replaced as the Exxon brand in the United States after Standard Oil of New Jersey stepped down with Exxon Mobil and decided to instead buy the rights to another oil company, “Humble Oil”. Despite this, the common trading name Esso is used almost everywhere except for the United States.
