Aviation tool

Image:
Description:
This is some type of aviation part or tool. The maker’s mark reads “Air Associates” with a star in the middle. The company marketed itself as the first to provide complete servicing to airplane owners, manufacturing and distributing aeronautical and automotive materials and accessories. The company started in early 1927, so this is the oldest this item could be. The services and parts provided by Air Associates were used to help such well-known aviators as Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, and Armeno Lotti Jr. The item looks as if it should hinge open but is stuck in the position pictured. We have so far been unable to determine what this item is, if you have any information, please contact us!
