Description:

A metal mill file with a wooden handle that was used by Teresa Summerskill and it was donated by Laura Burden. The mill file is used for sharpening various domestic tools, such as saws. On one side on the bottom of the file reads "Mill Bastard", in which the metal file is known as a "bastard cut" from the making; hence the engraved rough lines at the tip. On the other side of the file reads "Nicholson - Made In Canada". This brand name is referred to the full company name of The Nicholson File Company Complex, which was found in 1859 by William Nicholson. Some of the first products made were machine-made files during that year and as well precision tools used in the manufacture of armaments during the American Civil War, specifically for the Union Army. Some of the oldest buildings also has been made from the years 1864-1865 and had expanded throughout the 20th century. The wooden handle also at the bottom on one side has "No. 14 - Disston - Canada" engraved in the wood. For donor biography see description for 021.10.01.

Description:

A metal jack plane with a wooden bottom peg and a long wooden top handle that was used by Teresa Summerskill and it was donated by Laura Burden. The plane does not have a visible brand name or any other indications of where it was made from. Although, it may have been manufactured from a factory instead of being hand made judging by the maker's quality. For donor biography see description for 021.10.01.

Description:

Butt Gage. Used for marking how much wood to carve out of a door to make room for a hinge to lie flat. a) is a rectangular piece of metal (steel) with semi-circle handle attached on top. Three edges of rectangle have raised blades. The case to go around the metal piece is fabric with plastic coating, intended to look like leather. b) case.

Description:

Plane for woodwork. Is used for cutting grooves in wood. Made of metal except for wooden handle. Metal is dark in colour, upper half has ornate pattern. Handle is dark in colour. Body of object is flat with two bars attached perpendicular on back. Bars should be held by screws. One screw is there but other is missing. It has several parts that are adjustable.

Description:

An inscription reads "Stanley SW , Made in Canada, No 2." The inscription is at the bottom of the level. The level is made of wood with iron reinforcements and iron "bubble" holders. It is a long rectangular block of wood. This item appears to be in good condition but is slightly worn.

This is a hand plane. It is similar to modern day planes except that it has a wooden base. It has a metal handle and apparatus. It has a secondary handle in the front which is a knob. This item appears to be in good condition but it has a covering of fine flood silt.

Description:

Carpenter's tool box containing a) pin pliers, b) awl, c) gimlet, d) saw set, e) parallel pliers, f) hand drill with three augers (g-i) plus the wooden case (k). Tools were very rusted and were cleaned and oiled by Monty Savage [Volunteer]. Great example of a basic tool kit. This object had been left at the museum by unknown donor and was found in the Soo Bldg. attic.
