Guest Services / Tour Guide Lead - 2023

Reports to: Museum Supervisor, and The Curator

 

 

The Pemberton Museum staff team is made up of a dynamic group of individuals dedicated to sharing the history of Pemberton with our community and the world.

 

Terms of employment: Seasonal Full-Time, $18-19/hr. depending on experience

May 8, 2023 – October 31, 2023 / 32 hrs. per week (including Saturdays)

 

Overview: The Guest Services Lead is a driven and fun-loving individual that leads the Tour Guides and Guest Services Team with support from the Museum Supervisor and Curator.

The ideal candidate for the position will be curious, creative, outgoing, eager to learn, and willing to become an ambassador and storyteller (both in person and through collection and exhibits). The ideal candidate should additionally possess a keen interest in art, local histories, and the educational role of museums and cultural institutions.

 

Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Support the Museum Supervisor in training and supervising Museum Guides.
  • Support with marketing content including signage, social media, newsletters, and exhibits.

 

Visitor Services: 

  • Greet all visitors to the museum and connect them to Pemberton history and regional activities.
  • Develop fun activities and educational resources for onsite and online visitors including school groups and special events.
  • Assist with creation or improvement of signage, labels and educational materials related to our collection and Pemberton history.
  • Other duties as required including: opening and closing the site, maintenance of exhibits and museum grounds, preparation for special events and activities.

 

Guided Tours:

  • Deliver guided tours to individuals and groups as required, including local school groups.
  • Connect visitors to Pemberton history through guided tours that highlight artifacts and information from the Pemberton Museum’s collection.
  • Provide assistance to visitors to ensure they have access to the museum, its displays, and resources.
  • Recommend and connect visitors to other cultural activities, national historic sites, indigenous cultural centers, and other museums in the Sea to Sky region.

 

The successful applicant will possess the following skills and abilities:

  • High school and/or post-secondary education
  • An appreciation of local history and museums, and their role in a community
  • Excellent communication skills; verbal and written.
  • Comfort speaking and engaging with the public (children, adults, people from around the world)
  • Reliable and professional work standards
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Works cooperatively with others and on their own.
  • Experience with MS Office; especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Physical requirements include working outside, lifting, moving, or carrying objects of various weight and dimension, climbing stairs, using a step ladder, standing for long periods, walking on uneven surfaces, and desk work.

 

Additional skills that will assist applicants in this role:

  • An understanding/direct experience of local indigenous culture, protocols, and language (Stl’atl’imx)
  • Proficient at other computer programs for graphic design and/or multimedia creation or presentations such as Photoshop, InDesign, or Illustrator.
  • Proficient with social media apps

 

* This position is dependent on funding from the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Thus, the successful candidate must meet the following criteria: be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and, have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulation.
