Railway

Description:

Rail tracks running beside a small shack in the bush. Hand written in ink on photo "Just a tumbledown shack on an old railroad track" with musical notes. Joe notes on the back "I took this picture in 1987 at the Green River Crossing. This little cabin was a powder shack in the construction days. The relic was removed many years later while cleaning up a train wreck at this highway crossing. Shack was about 30 yds north of the crossing".

Caption "Howe Sound & Northern Railway Company 'Two-Spot'", (item appears to be part of a newspaper clipping. Joe notes on the back of the photo "This combine caboose was almost certainly made by the early members of the P.G.E. and it may be true that the railway made their own cabooses in their shops right to the end of caboose use. The one in this picture is a classic one of a kind but didn't survive. Locomotive is the old no. 2 on display at W.C.Rlway (sic) museum in Squamish".

Very large passenger train. On the back Joe notes "An 8 car train of Budd cars on B.C. Rail. I wonder if that may be a record? I have some 6 and 7 car trains too but the 8 car train was the longest I have seen. Head end heading away from Pemberton Stn., is nearly onto Red Bridge".

Description:

P.G.E. rail car #1801. Joe notes on the back "1801 probably on it's way to scrap yard. Sat at Birken siding quite a while, in the 1950's. New in 1914 as a gas passenger car. In it's following years it had a cupola installed on the roof to serve as a combine coach and caboose on the way freight".

Description:

Large group of people in front of a railway passenger car. Caption "Opening ceremonies of the Pacific Great Eastern's North Shore Line on January 1, 1914" Item appears to be part of a newspaper article. Joe notes on the back "I think this second car survived to about the end of steam. It became number 1801 and saw duty on steam and diesel passenger trains as a diner until the Budds came then it was made into passenger, baggage and a cupola on top and served on the way-freight as 'passenger caboose'. Picture taken at Gates Lake siding at Birken in the 50's when it served as caboose (cupola) for the way freight as they picked up passengers as well as logs and poles and freight. Car was in that siding for a while - bad ordered maybe. See picture at Gates Lake (Birken)".

Description:

Speeder. Bears logo "West Coast Railway Association" Joe notes on the back "This was my speeder for work between D'arcy and Marne and also from Pemberton to Parkhurst and (now Whistler) Alta Lake) (sic). That was 1952 when I served as Acting Ranger for the B.C. Forest Service summer 1952. Speeder is now in Rlwy Museum Squamish".
