Bear Trap

Bear Trap

Description:

The bear trap is in fairly good shape with average signs of wear; some degree of rust is present on the center piece (by which the bear sets the trap off when he steps on it). There looks to be an old maker's name of some sort. Arvin Starks & George Bikadi found it in the McKenzie Basin in 1957 while hunting. Believed to have belonged to Oscar Johnson. [update 2013]: Bob Menzel believes the type of trap to be "Newhouse" brand based on the hinges (Aug 2013).

Electro Bugs

Electro Bugs

Description:

Three "Electro Bugs" manufactured by Challenger Electronics in Vancouver BC. These are large stainless steel whistle control boxes that are curved and affixed to a belt, worn by men involved in grapple yarding or steel spar skyline operations. Two of these belts (b,c) are older in design than a) and b,c were considered more difficult to use. All whistle systems use a dual button or trigger system to ensure the whistle is not activated by accident. This system was used by the Valleau logging to improve communication technology, productivity and work place safety. See accession # 014.26.01 for history.

Talkie Tooters

Talkie Tooters

Description:

These are two talkie tooters. The item is a long square rectangular object with "Talkie Tooter" inscribed on the side. The unit has a curved block handle and is depressed in tandem with pushing a button to "toot" the whistle. The units have a canvas belt affixed so that a logger could wear these units in the field. The units had a mercury switch and could only be activated when right side up to ensure they were not accidentally triggered signalling the operator when it wasn't required. These units replaced the "Electro Bug" belts and were considered a great improvement in communication technology at the time. See accession # 014.26.01 for history.
