First Nations Basket Tray

First Nations Basket Tray

Description:

The wood is dirty and there are broken strips around the edges and handles. The baskets had mould growth previously so it has been vacuumed and there are some stains on the bottom and sides. Some strips have come loose and broken off and there is some darkened discolouration around the edges. There is a red and black diamond pattern on the face of the basket. The basket was found in Kaslo, BC and shipped to the museum after the donor found us online and identified the design as originating from the Coast Salish community.

Large Table Knife

Large Table Knife

Description:

Large table-type knife with rusted blade, shank with beaded design, a probably silver handle which flares out near the end to an egg shape and end in a small round section. The engraved design on the handle is intricate, with much beading. Two long column like motifs, one on either side; and a flower motif on the round section. Condition: Blade is generally rusted, and worn on the cutting edge. In general grooves in shank and handle are filled with earth. History: Found in Gates Creek.

Boxing Tool

Description:

Boxing tool. Pair of pliers with several features added. On end of one handle is screwdriver. End of other handle is flat with a triangle cut out of end to form two prongs about 0.6 cm long. On the back of one side of the head of the pliers is a rectangular hammer, on the back of the other side is a small axe.

Description:

Butt Gage. Used for marking how much wood to carve out of a door to make room for a hinge to lie flat. a) is a rectangular piece of metal (steel) with semi-circle handle attached on top. Three edges of rectangle have raised blades. The case to go around the metal piece is fabric with plastic coating, intended to look like leather. b) case.

Description:

Brass dish with handle. It has a circular base which widens slightly to middle. A curved handle attached to either side. The middle section of dish has a pattern of dents all the way around. Sticker on bottom reads "Solid Brass Handmade in India".

Description:

Two drawer pulls. Brass (?). The face is octagon with ornate pattern. Handle is attached to middle sides and shaped to fit around bottom. There is a red plastic disk on back of face, and around attachment for screw. There are silver coloured screws in the attachment.

Description:

Two identical oil lamps but one is missing glass cover. Blue in colour with a circular base. On the top of base is piece that holds wick. Glass cover goes around wick. Two arms off base support the chimney. They have a wire handle attached to arms. On the chimney is "Made in China Kang Hwa" in raised letters. Chinese characters on base. a) lamp with chimney b) lamp without chimney.

Description:

Plane for woodwork. Is used for cutting grooves in wood. Made of metal except for wooden handle. Metal is dark in colour, upper half has ornate pattern. Handle is dark in colour. Body of object is flat with two bars attached perpendicular on back. Bars should be held by screws. One screw is there but other is missing. It has several parts that are adjustable.

Small, light-weight, probably aluminum, cookie cutter with rounded wooden handled which is bulbous at the top. It is dented on one edge of the cutter. It was used in Eleanor Collister's kitchen at Mt. Currie.

Pear Corers

Description:

Small tools with wooden handles and metal heads. Handles are round and metal heads. Handles are round of natural wood. Irregularly shaped heads, of thin metal bands, are formed to scoop cores from halved pears. Metal collars encircle narrowed section joining heads and handles. 984 .1.8 has a strip of black tape nearly surrounding the handle. On this tool the collar is loose. 984.1.9 is sound. Mrs. Collister is said to have used these in a cannery, probably in Richmond, where she earned fees to attend V.G.H. School of Nursing. In 1953 she came to Pemberton and probably brought the tools with her.

Mechanical Seeder

Description:

Mechanical seeder with extra part and wrench. belonged to Larry's father, John Cosulich, who was the president of the Pemberton Co-operative Association in the 1960's. "Planet Jr. - Made in the United States of America" stamped on to handle and on seed hopper. "No. 300 A". Unit has two metal wheels, the front wheel is larger than the rear and has a square metal hopper for seed. Wooden handles for wheeling and metal levers for dropping seed. Some rust. Original paint colour was green for wheels and frame and red for seed hopper. Red wrench and extra part for seeder are attached to handle. Wrench has "Planet Jr." on it in raised lettering, some loss of paint and rust. Extra part is pointed at one end and has "K/806" on it in raised lettering, some rust. Condition is fair. a) seeder b) wrench c) spare part.

Description:

The pot is gallon sized, off white enamel, trimmed red, with wire handle and a wooden grip. The bottom has cracks all around and is rusted. It was used on a farm now belonging to Howard Ayers The first owner was Harvey Nelson in the late 19th century. Following him and his family, in the 20th century, were James Barton and members of a Cleveland family who came from the Cariboo. The latter farmed the land after World War II. Who owned the pot? No trace shows of the effects of a fire which destroyed the farm house.

Native bag

Native bag

Description:

A native bag weaved by uclulet people with "Uclulet" on the front with a braided handles. It once belonged to Margaret Furey (nee Ronayne) - she received it from an unknown source. UBC looked the basket was valuable. It comes with care and conservation documents from the UBC Museum of Anthropology.
